1.73 Earths — and Vietnam has already spent this year’s budget as of July 19
On July 30, Global Footprint Network announced Earth Overshoot Day 2026: humanity is now using nature 73% faster than ecosystems can regenerate, the equivalent of living on 1.73 Earths.
One detail worth clarifying, because it’s easy to misread: this date is six days later than 2025 (July 24) — which sounds like good news. But that’s mostly the result of revised data (the ocean’s carbon-absorption capacity was recalculated upward), not because humanity is consuming less. On a consistent data set, this year’s overshoot is the largest ever recorded.
For Vietnam, the number is more striking: Vietnam’s Country Overshoot Day 2026 falls on July 19 — it would take 1.8 Earths if the whole world consumed the way Vietnam does. Looking only at real shifts in consumption (excluding the data revision), that date arrived roughly 11 days earlier than the year before. In other words: while the world got a technical reprieve, Vietnam’s actual consumption trend is moving faster toward the line.
What concerns us more is a companion report Global Footprint Network released alongside this: “Prepared for the Predictable?” After analyzing the economic strategies of dozens of countries, the finding was stark — not a single country meaningfully integrates resource limits into its economic planning. Resource risk remains a blind spot, at the national level and the organizational level alike.
This is exactly why we built OED — Organizational Ecological Deficit — GLC’s own measurement tool, which lets an organization see a smaller-scale version of this same national problem: how much faster is your organization consuming resources than it can regenerate them, and on what date does your own ecological budget for the year run out.
Given how fast this year’s data moved, we believe the OED curriculum needs to reach classrooms and boardrooms faster than originally planned — not wait for another “highest ever recorded” headline before acting.
🌍 GLC × NEPA is preparing the OED Forum & Green Career Workshop (expected September 2026), part of the Earth Day Vietnam 2026 series — “Toward a Sustainable Future 10,” a campaign of action heading toward COP31.
